68 – Monument King

This isn’t just any building, this is Groningen’s iconic water tower.
Designed by city architect Mulock Houwer, commissioned in 1912, struck by bullets during the liberation in World War II, and officially decommissioned in 2013 by the city’s water company. And soon? A nesting spot for peregrine falcons.

Today, the tower has been given a new life as a boutique hotel. Yet its history is present in every beam, wall, and window. We didn’t erase the past, we embraced it.

The tower has earned its monumental status not just by age, but by presence. Bullet holes still mark the outer brickwork. Steel and concrete run visibly through the structure like a historical spine. Some apartments have gently sloped concrete floors, a result of the original construction techniques that we’ve preserved with pride. This is a place where design doesn’t flatten history. It reveals it. And invites you to live inside it.

Layout

The apartment features a one bedroom design with lots of light, giving the space an open, airy feel. The bedroom includes a king-size bed and a bathroom-en-suite for that extra hotel-feeling.

The open-plan living area is designed for relaxing and unwinding. There’s a comfortable seating corner, a dining table for four, and a fully equipped kitchen with bar, perfect for preparing meals or enjoying a quiet evening in. A separate toilet adds to the convenience.

With its smart layout, natural light, and historic surroundings, this apartment is an excellent choice for both short and extended stays in Groningen, whether you’re visiting for work, study, or leisure.
