History
Cornelis Hofstede de Groot was a renowned Dutch art historian and a key authority on Golden Age painting, particularly the works of Rembrandt van Rijn. His extensive research and meticulous cataloguing of Dutch masters continue to serve as a fundamental reference for scholars and museums worldwide.
During his lifetime, Hofstede de Groot donated a large part of his impressive private art collection to the city of Groningen. Thanks to his generosity, masterpieces by artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt, Albert Cuyp and Jacob van Ruisdael remain on public display in the Groninger Museum today.
The quay where the Watertower is located proudly bears his name — a lasting tribute to a man whose dedication to Dutch art helped shape our cultural memory.
