History

On a cold, grey Friday — April 15th, 1945 — the last remaining German forces in Groningen were locked in fierce battle with the Canadian battalion The Black Watch of Canada. Determined to defend key access points to the city center, the Germans positioned themselves in strategic locations, including the Watertower, where snipers fired at the advancing Canadian troops.

As the Canadians pushed southward from the northern neighborhoods toward the city center, they faced fire from the tower. In order to clear the way, they positioned a 6-pounder gun across the bridge and fired directly at the Watertower. One of the water tanks inside the structure was hit, causing a massive surge of water to pour from the building.

During the intense fighting that day, two Canadian soldiers — Emerson Garfield Riddell and Regan Raymond Dallaire — were killed by enemy fire. Both are buried to this day in Hoogkerk, just outside Groningen.

The events of that day live on in the marks left behind — and in the stories the tower continues to tell.
