History
Groningen was the last Dutch province to be liberated near the end of World War II, in April 1945. As Allied forces advanced, many German soldiers retreated to the north, concentrating in Groningen. Because the city was densely populated, no air raids were used during the liberation — instead, heavy ground fighting broke out between the remaining German troops and the advancing Canadian forces.
Two renowned Canadian battalions — The Black Watch of Canada and The Calgary Highlanders — were responsible for liberating the northern districts of the city, including the Noorderplantsoen and Schilderswijk neighborhoods.
Visible around the entrance of the Watertower are bullet marks that still bear witness to the intense street battles that took place here. In fact, the tower itself was fired upon with a 6-pounder gun by Canadian forces, in an effort to literally and figuratively drive out the German soldiers inside.
Today, the Watertower stands not only as a unique place to stay — but also as a quiet monument to the resilience and history of the city.
